He was born Mitchell Allen Smith, but everyone knew him simply as Mitch. For others, Mitch could be used with that rhyming word, but for this Mitch is was just easier to say and remember. For he was just the kindest and sweetest person you would ever meet. From a young age he would go around and pull neighbors trash cans out to the curb on trash day. He would mow lawns in the neighborhood. And he never took a single dime. Mitch simply loved to be of service.
In fact in Jr High he was a safety monitor. He protected the hallways from unauthorized visitors during nutrition and lunch breaks. Not exactly a glamorous job, but Mitch loved it. You see he did not exactly have many friends. Something he would later attribute to having been autistic, but did not know about at the time. That along with social anxiety, something else he was unaware of.
Mitch loved the job as it gave him an opportunity to eat his school provided free meals by himself, away from the other students. As much as he was seen as sweet and kind, it was those exact qualities that caused others to not be interested in him.
He was what is known as a square. The person who would cling to the wall at dances and sit by himself at lunch. Not exactly what other students wanted. At the time Mitch attributed the way he was largely due to upbringing, but also due to being poor. No one really seemed to want to be seen hanging out with the poor kid.
While his clothes did not have holes in them, they were clearly not the latest styles and definitely screamed coming from a thrift store. Decades later Mitch would realize just how much environmental damage he was avoiding by reusing other people wasted clothing, but to a child, even Mitch, being isolated like that from your peers has to take a toll. But Mitch did not let the isolate bother him. In fact it is largely what set him up for the life that he would end up having. The isolation might have even played some role in what he did in the last moments of his life.
